I went to Freebirds in Arlington to get some nachos before the game tonight. Masked up and winged down, I wanted to see if anyone would know who the Dallas Wings were at the restaurant.
This is what I wore. Wings shirt and a Wings masks. The service was awesome and there were three women working the line. Here is how it went down after nachos were built.
“Do you know the team shirt I am wearing?”
“It sounds familiar, is it our hockey team?”
“No ma’am, it is our WNBA team.”
“Oh, I am not that into basketball. I am more of a football fan.”
“Oh really, which is your favorite football team?”
“What other team is there?”
We had a mutual agreement on our Dallas Cowboys without even speaking the name. One day, I would like to be able to do the same thing about my #Wangs!
It is sad that the Freebirds location is less than 5 miles away from the College Park Center, where the Wings have played since 2016. I asked the other two ladies if they knew of the Wings and they had no idea. When we checked out, I let them know the game was coming on tonight on Fox Sports as well as the double-header on ESPN. We went down the street to QT and the cashier did not know we had a “women’s NBA team”
It is totally wild to me that the people of Arlington do not know that the Dallas Wings exist. My boo was chatting about the return of basketball, while she was talking about the W, he did not even know that the W was back or that “Dallas” had a team. The man has lived in A-town all of his life. It is pretty ridiculous. We have had several top rated players come through the city. We have a solid base now, but will we be able to keep it together? I sure hope so.
In the meantime, I will continue to let everyone know about my Dallas Wings. I honestly do not know if I can make it through the heartbreak of losing another team, especially in Texas. The problem is out of our control. I just want it to be known that there are fans that care about the players, team and the bonds created with other fans, let’s expand that. The word must continue to be spread at least starting in Arlington. How do we make it happen? Let me hear your thoughts on the Twitter!
