Besides the amazing talent, the fans are the coolest thing about the WNBA. Over the years, I have had the pleasure of meeting and interacting with different fans on social. I think the stories of how those fans came to enjoy the WNBA are important.
This next WNBALove Story was a pleasure to read and I am excited to share. This young lady is a high school student and has been a part of the X-Factor since 2016. She has had the pleasure of meeting the Phoenix Mercury over the past two years including the G.O.A.T. Diana Taurasi. She was also featured on the Phoenix Mercury’s Instagram and was on Britney Griner’s Instagram live (pics below). Please enjoy this next WNBALove Story from Aya Abdeen and give her a follow @ayaabdeen__ on Instagram and @ayaabdeen on Twitter.
“I began watching the WNBA when I attended to my first ever Phoenix Mercury game on May 29, 2016 and I saw Diana Taurasi’s incredible leadership to the Mercury and I became a fan ever since then. I’m so proud to become a Phoenix Mercury fan and I also love watching women playing basketball! Women and girls can do anything! I believe in them.
I’ve attended so many Mercury games. Also I’m a founder of Win4Sancho. Win4Sancho means to give Sancho Lyttle her first ever WNBA Championship experience before she retires from playing in the WNBA (since 2005) and she played with Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner in Russia btw. The number 4 stands for the amount of Championships the Mercury could have if they win this year’s finals. The WNBA is SO important! I gave Diana Taurasi her letter in person when I met her for the 2nd time in Fry’s trading places.
In 2017, when I attended to a Phoenix Mercury game when they won over the Indiana Fever by 23pts and seeing Brittney Griner score over 30pts for the first time in her WNBA career in person, I did a poster that said congratulations to Diana Taurasi and Penny Taylor for getting married then I told them to adopt me as a joke, the results were I got dabbed on by Diana Taurasi by the end of the game when she was asking me if I wanted a free t-shirt thrown into the crowd and I dabbed at her.
The following month, I tried meeting and giving Diana Taurasi her sand bottle and a letter on Taurasi night as we celebrated her making history for becoming an all-time leading scorer in the WNBA, it didn’t work so I had to give the presents to the security guards. On May 15, 2018, my mom and I went to Fry’s trading places for the first time (I was picked up from school early cuz I knew what I was Missing and got the information from the teachers, it was my freshman year) and it was incredible. My mom asked Diana Taurasi (while she was making flowers) if she got the sand bottle, and she did. Then she told me that she’ll make the flowers for me in front of the fans and oh my goodness it was amazing.
Overall, meeting the team the last 2 years was awesome!
When I begin my college career in less than 2 years, I want to become a journalist for the Phoenix Mercury (or an assistant coach for the team) because I’ve always dreamed about working with the Phoenix Mercury since I was 13 years old. I still can’t wait to go to more Mercury games and cheer them on! Mighty Mercury forever ~Win4Sancho continues!~ ”
